What inspired you to create Westman Atelier (WA)? What sets WA apart from other brands on the market?
I noticed a gap in the market for products that included skincare ingredients at effective levels (without questionable ingredients) and that also had the high performance I was used to using as a makeup artist. You could find something "natural" or something innovative, but not necessarily both. We're bridging that gap, delivering makeup that not only enhances appearance, but also believes our beauty products should offer us more.
Where does the brand's charming and chic French style come from?
My career began at a prestigious makeup school in Paris. I thought, "At least if I'm not good at this, I'll learn French!" Years later, as artistic director of Lancôme, I traveled to France twice a month, and that culture is a constant source of inspiration. You'll notice that many Westman Atelier products reference French expressions. My favorites include 'Peau de Pêche' (peach skin) for our famous Super Loaded Tinted Highlight. I also love the shade names of our Squeaky Clean Liquid Lip Balms, like Chou Chou and Ma Biche, which are classic terms of endearment.
Rosacea played a key role in the creation of WA. Can you tell us more about it?
One of our first products, now a staple in our foundation system, the Vital Skin Foundation Stick, was inspired by my struggle with rosacea. I wanted something that not only corrected my skin but also included caring ingredients that would calm, soothe, and improve redness over time. That was the moment I started dreaming about other products.
One of the brand's biggest hits is the Vital Foundation Stick, an undisputed bestseller. This formula is silicone-free. What's the advantage of this?
As a makeup artist, I needed to create exceptional shades that performed at the highest level, but putting these potentially irritating chemicals in contact with the skin wasn't acceptable. Silicones feel smooth, but they actually sit on the surface as a barrier, and I find them irritating. I didn't want them to prevent the active ingredients from penetrating and doing their job. After extensive testing and research, we developed innovative and safe alternatives.
The world of makeup can be overwhelming, not only because of the number of products, but also because of the time and technique required. What would you say to women who haven't yet taken the plunge? What difference can WA make?
Makeup doesn't have to be intimidating! Most of our products can be applied with your fingers, and we've created a set of essentials that are designed to easily integrate into your daily routine. Plus, everything in our collection is designed to work together, so you can create a look with as few steps as you like.
What are your three must-have products from the brand? Can you tell us a little about them?
I'm equally passionate about all of our products, so it's hard to choose! But our first skincare product, Skin Activator, has had a huge impact on improving the quality of my skin, so I don't go a day without applying it! I use it morning and night. I also love our new concealer because a little goes a long way. I just apply it where I need it—a little darkness here, a red spot there—and it blends in perfectly, making my skin look natural. And finally, I'm obsessed with our Liquid Super Loaded in Peau de Soleil because it adds the perfect touch of warmth and instantly makes me look like I just got back from vacation.
You frequently work as a makeup artist for actresses like Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and Gwyneth Paltrow (for whom you did her wedding makeup). Do you show them prototypes? Do they give you feedback on the products?
I always have samples in my professional makeup kit and I'm constantly trying them out myself. Sometimes I give a sneak peek of what's coming up on my Instagram based on what I've worn on a recent red carpet.
Let's talk about your brushes (which are a Japanese work of art). How are they made? Your products can also be applied with your fingers. What's the difference?
Our brushes are handmade by artisans in Japan with incredibly soft, cruelty-free bristles that are just the right density for flawless application. We've also made the handles shorter for greater control. While you can apply our products with your fingers, good brushes can make a huge difference in how polished your makeup application is.
